The Whole Elephant - Elon Musk Twitter Special

Published about 2 years ago • 1 min read

Hey Team,

When I got to the office this morning, I felt inspired to create a pop-up newsletter on Elon Musk's plan to purchase Twitter.

Here's a quick glimpse at a few angles on this whole elephant topic.

Venture Capital Twitter

There are many serious discussions about the numerous ways Musk could increase revenue.

Jack Dorsey

Jack Dorsey, co-founder and recently exited CEO:

His reference to @paraga, the new CEO, suggests Dorsey wanted to make changes that the board or Wall Street wouldn't support.

Note the reference to, "into the stars!" Musk's SpaceX is deploying 35,000 low orbit satellites to create Starlink, a global communication network. Twitter's short message format uses very little bandwidth and could become a free global communication service?

Free Speech

Trump and Covid put a spotlight on free speech on social media platform.

Trump was removed from Twitter. People who spread false information about Covid saw their accounts shut down temporarily or permanently. Depending on your point of view, you agree or disagree with this response.

Many hope that Musk will increase free speech by making the rules simpler and algorithm more transparent.

But many question whether Musk will have the time to dedicate to the complex topic of balancing free and hate speech. Here's an excellent, but long read on the difficulty of social media speech moderation.

My Personal Hot Take

Musk is a heavy Twitter user.

He understands the power of the platform, and is familiar with the hot topics. Does he have all the solutions? Does he even have a detailed plan? I don't know.

I am cautiously optimistic.

I hope everyone has a great week. If you liked or dislike this format, I'd love to know. As always, I will do my best to reply.

Course - Drawing Assistant - Connectedness Hey Friends, This is a little tech heavy, but bear with me. It's fascinating stuff, IMHO. My First Digital Course A few students from the recently concluded Write of Passage course asked if I would run follow-up mentor sessions. If you recall, I taught five sessions over five weeks during the course's 8th cohort. This would be extra. I enjoy the topic of Personal Monopoly and teaching it makes me dig deeper. Also, this gives me the opportunity to go...

Hey Team, Greetings from Houston. The Last Session The online writing course Write of Passage wrapped up this week. For newcomers, I was helping students explore their personal monopoly - the unique intersection of a person’s skills, interests, and personality traits and how to translate it to become known as the best thinker on a topic. I've been looking at the subject for the past six months, and it's fascinating: There are millions of people building businesses as content creators,...

April Fool - Avocado War - Nomads - Strawberries Hey Team, I hope you had a great week. Let’s dive in. April Fool A decade ago I pulled off a textbook-funny April Fools joke. But as I recalled it yesterday, I wasn't laughing. It was cruel and I'd take it back if I could. The victim of my joke was my then-6-year-old daughter, Ava. She's very smart, gets her work done, and is pretty easy-going. She's also gullible which is a curse if you live in my house. The joke took place at the end of her...
